Our wellbeing

The safety of our employees, contractors, patrons and the public is paramount. Veolia Transport provides comprehensive and ongoing training for bus drivers to modify risky driving behaviours. Veolia Transport has AS/NZ 4801:2001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems certification.

Example: DriveCam and SmartDriver

In 2008, the DriveCam system, an onboard recorder that monitors driving behaviour such as hard braking and swerving, was introduced to the Perth CATS bus fleet.  Information is downloaded and analysed to improve individual driving behaviour. Since the introduction of the system, the number of collisions as decreased from 60 in 2007 to 25 in 2008.

In 2009, DriveCam was superseeded with the SmartDriver technology, which was also installed in another 64 buses in the Fremantle/Cockburn fleet. This vehicle monitoring system improves on DriveCam by providing GPS capability, thus producing accurate, real-time data such as vehicle speed and GPS location, and additional engine management data such as engine idle-time.

Example: Platinum WorkSafe Plan Certificate of Achievement

Veolia Transport has one of WA’s lowest rates of work-related injury. Our record has been recognised with a Platinum WorkSafe Plan Certificate of Achievement, presented by the Department of Consumer & Employment Protection.

Platinum Certificates are only presented to organisations that achieve the highest standards. To obtain a Platinum Certificate, we had to demonstrate that our rate of work-related injury and disease are decreasing or kept at low levels.

The Certificate of Achievement remains valid for three years subject to annual written confirmation that we continue to meet injury/disease rate criteria, in accordance with the WorkSafe Plan process.

Our commitment to safety improvement has long been recognised by the WA Government. Veolia Transport was awarded a Gold WorkSafe Plan Certificate several years ago, recognising competent management of safety and health in the workplace and our contribution to reducing work-related injury and disease in WA.
